About Komani

A canyon that was flooded on purpose

In 1978 a dam went up across the Drin at Koman and the river backed up 34 kilometres into a limestone gorge. What it left is a lake so narrow in places that the ferry passes with a few metres of daylight on either side.

There is no road along most of it. Villages on the shore are reached by boat or not at all, and the ferry that runs from Koman to Fierza still exists because people live there, not because tourists photograph it. That is the reason the trip feels different from a scenic cruise — you are riding the local bus.

North of the lake the Shala River comes down from the Alps, clear and cold, and beyond that the Accursed Mountains rise to 2,500 metres along the Montenegrin border. Most people see the lake in a day. It is worth four.

5 out of 5 We took the private boat with two small children and it was the best decision of the trip. The captain found a beach with shallow water where the kids could paddle, and we ate lunch with our feet in the river. Not one queue all day.

5 out of 5 Eight days on the Peaks of the Balkans with Wild Tour Albania. Border permits sorted, luggage where it should be every evening, and a guide who knew which shepherd made the best cheese. Hard walking, faultless logistics.

5 out of 5 Booked the self-guided four days from Warsaw with two clicks and never had to chase anybody. Every transfer turned up. The Valbona pass in clear weather is something I will think about for years.

5 out of 5 First time in a kayak and I was worried. The guide spent twenty minutes on technique before we launched and by the end I was paddling into caves. The water is very cold and completely worth it.

4 out of 5 The day tour does what it says. The gorge is spectacular and the ferry is comfortable. Shala gets busy around midday, so take the guide's advice and walk ten minutes upstream.

5 out of 5 I photograph landscapes and asked for a 6am departure. They said yes without fuss. Mist on the water in the first hour, and we had the whole canyon to ourselves until nine.

Koman village is about two hours by road from Shkodër and three and a half from Tirana. Most travellers stay in Shkodër the night before and leave at 06:00. We can add a hotel pickup to any booking for €15 per person, or arrange a private transfer from Tirana Airport.

Yes for the day tour, the private boat and the self-guided trip — the private boat is the easiest with small children because you set the pace. Kayaking is from age 10. The eight-day Peaks of the Balkans route is not suitable for under-16s.

Cancel more than 7 days before departure and you get a full refund, no questions. Between 7 days and 48 hours it is 50%. Inside 48 hours the boats and guesthouses are already paid for, so we cannot refund — but you can transfer your booking to someone else at any time, free.

If your captain or guide cancels for safety, you choose: a free date change or a full refund including any deposit. That decision is always ours to make, never yours to argue about. Rain alone is not a cancellation — the gorge is arguably better in cloud.

Yes. The Komani to Shala private boat is €350 for up to seven people including the captain and fuel. Any other experience on the site can be run privately — email us with your dates and group size for a quote.

Card, online, through Stripe. We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay and Google Pay in euros. You will get a confirmation email with a booking reference within a minute. No cash needed at the pier.
