The best time to visit Komani Lake

Month by month: water temperature, crowd levels, ferry reliability and what the light does.

Spring snow on the ridges above the Valbona valley

Short answer

Late May to mid June, or mid September to early October. You get warm days, a full ferry timetable, open guesthouses in the Alps, and roughly a third of the visitors of peak August.

April and May

Snowmelt fills the rivers and the waterfalls are at their best. The lake is high and green. The Valbona to Theth pass usually clears around the third week of May, sometimes later. Water is too cold for most people to swim.

June

Arguably the best month. Long days, everything open, the Alps green rather than burnt, and the crowd has not arrived. Water around 18 °C at the surface in the reservoir, much colder in the Shala.

July and August

Hot — mid-30s in Shkodër, several degrees cooler on the water. The busiest period by a wide margin, especially the first fortnight of August. Book the ferry and guesthouses weeks ahead. Afternoon wind on the lake is common.

September and October

The best light of the year and the mist season. Water is still swimmable well into September. Some guesthouses in Theth close from mid October, and the pass becomes a weather gamble by the end of the month.

November to March

The ferry still runs, mostly for locals, and the gorge in low winter light is extraordinary. But the Alps roads close, most guesthouses shut, and boat tours to Shala do not operate. Come for the landscape, not for swimming.
