Theth: what to do and where to stay

Getting there

The road from Shkodër was paved through to Theth in 2022, which cut the journey from four punishing hours to about two and a half. Most people arrive on foot from Valbona over the pass, or by minibus from Shkodër.

The Blue Eye

A spring in a gorge about 7 km south of the village, reached on a two-hour walk from Nderlysa or a shorter one from the road head. The pool is a startling cobalt and roughly 8 °C. Entry €2. Go early; it is the busiest single spot in the valley by eleven.

Grunas waterfall

Thirty metres, twenty-five minutes' walk from the church, and much quieter than the Blue Eye. Best in late spring when the melt is running.

The lock-in tower

A kulla e ngujimit — a stone tower where men under blood feud could shelter under the Kanun code. Small, sobering, and the best short history lesson in the valley. Restored and open in season.

Where to stay

Family guesthouses, almost all of them half board, typically €35–55 per person including dinner and breakfast. Book ahead from June to September. Rooms are simple; the food is usually excellent and entirely local.

Practicalities

There is an ATM in the village now but it runs out. Bring cash. Mobile signal is decent, wifi is variable, and the electricity occasionally isn't.
